Main Street Banners & Flowers

The design committee of the Mountaindale Community Development Project worked over the winter to develop a new set of banners for our Main Streets.  They were funded with our Phase II Sullivan Renaissance Award from last summer. We were all so delighted when the banner delivery arrived. But then it rained, sometimes torentially, every day and then it was brutally hot, which made climbing a ladder to install them on the telephone poles around town an unpleasant task. Luckily, today's balmy weather was just perfect! Our new banners are a wonderful addition to our charming street and will be greeting all the summer visitors to Mountaindale this season.

Our interesting recent weather also created some challenges for the volunteers who worked on our flower box enhancement project this year. The original design of our Main Street flower boxes came to us from the Technology Education classes of the Fallsburg High School. They look terrific but had a flaw in practical application in the scope that we use since there are nearly 30 of them around town. A lot of water would leak out of the side slats, which was inefficient from both a water conservation and volunteer labor standpoint. A portion of our Renaissance winnings also went toward refurbishing the planters as well as enriching the soil with a precise mix recommended by the knowledgeable staff at EarthBox.

With a lot of support from local Girl Scouts of Troops 401, 580, 234 and 738, as well as students and parents of Upstate Karate of Mountaindale, we got the planters planted and out on the streets earlier this month. The Girl Scouts will continue to assist during the summer with watering tasks as well as working in the Communty Garden behind 51 Main Street and Radiant Yoga of Mountaindale. The Scouts are hoping to be able to grow enough vegetables to be able to donate some to people in need in the community. They will also have a small herb garden in an EarthBox planter that we purchased.

Yoga Students Lisa & Greg lending a hand
We are very fortunate for the support from the Scouts, Karate families and Yoga students who helped with other tasks to keep Mountaindale looking beautifully in bloom. They helped with maintenance of the Hummingbird Garden. It needed a lot of weeding and trimming after the winter. We are lucky to have Janet Gula in town as she is also the owner of My Secret Gardener and was the original designer of the Hummingbird Garden. I have also noticed how wonderful our Rock Garden at 37 Main Street looks next door to HospitalityGreen, thanks to all of the extra TLC that Evadne Giannini has been giving it.

I guess what I am saying is, "It takes a village" to keep our hamlet looking so great!  Thanks to everyone who participates in this effort!

Radiant Yoga Applause

This chilly afternoon became infinitely warmer with the wonderful news I received from Janet Gula. We learned that Radiant Yoga of Mountaindale was named BEST YOGA STUDIO OF SULLIVAN COUNTY in The River Reporter's annual Readers' Choice Awards. We are all so proud that Janet is being recognized for all of her hard work and dedication in bringing such high quality yoga instruction to all of her students. Anyone who has ever taken her class knows about her gentle, loving guidance through the poses being shared. Now is the perfect time to try a class with the lovely radiant heat tiled floors that are so deliciously warmed for the winter. Although summers are also great when the tiles are deliciously cool on your bare feet.
Why all the soleful musings? It's time for another one of Janet's inspiring special workshops. (Another reason for all the votes from her loyal students.) Please make it a point to attend
"Soothe your Sole ~ Foot Reflexology & Essential Oils" this Saturday, January 7th from 7 to 9PM at the Yoga Studio at 63 Main Street in Mountaindale. The expert instructors will be Susan Honig and Janet Gula, who promise an evening of Winter Wellness and FUN for Partners or Singles. Participants will receive a basic understanding of the feet as they relate to the entire body, helpful charts and valuable self-care/massage tools to be used an entire lifetime. Janet will also instruct in the use of essential oils and a special technique (Vitaflex), which enhances the healing process. Pure, organic essential oils will be used, which are nongreasy aromatic substances containing the "essential" plant constituents that offer great therapeutic benefits. Workshop: $18/person; $30/couple
Please RSVP to (845) 866-7822 or Visit MyRadiantYoga.com, where you can find the complete Yoga Class Schedule and info about other upcoming events to be hosted by Janet. Ballroom dancing anyone? Coming soon.

May 22 Radiant Yoga Essential Oils Seminar HUGE SUCCESS

Last Sunday May 22, Radiant Yoga played host to Nandini Weitzman, a NY State licensed Clinical Nutritionist and Alternative Health Practitioner as she gave participants in her workshop some hands on experience in NAT (Neuro-Auricular Traning with Therapeutic Essential Oils). She shared the simple and safe techniques used for deep relaxation that many alternative medicine practitioners are using for panic, anxiety, sleep disorders. depression, inflammation, and even ADD/ADHD.

The workshop began with an information session, during which Nandini explained the techniques; identified the five essential oils; as well as the process of applying them with light pressure along the occipital (cranial) ridge, neck and shoulders to safely affect brain-related nerves deeply to positively impact digestive organs, lungs, heart, eyes, ears, nose and the endocrine system. The talk was both extensive, and informative, and the end of class handouts to take home were very welcome by all in attendance. Once this section of the seminar was over, she gave the class a demonstration of the oils and techniques and answered numerous questions from the audience.

At the conclusion of this part of the seminar, the participants were paired up in groups, with EVERYONE actually getting to both give and receive a Therapeutic Essential Oils treatment. This hands on exchange of treatments allowed the students to learn the techniques, experience the benefits, while at the same time reinforcing the afternoons lessons through actual hands on practice of what they had been taught.

If your group is interested in arranging a seminar you can contact Nandini directly via her email which is nandiniyes@hotmail.com or give her a ring at (845) 434-2408.

Janet at Radiant Yoga here in Mountaindale New York is to be commended for once again bringing a wonderful holistic opportunity to our community of Mountaindale and its surrounding area. If you would like to know more about her Yoga Classes, and other seminars, or are interested in having her design a special class for your group or organization, sure she would love to hear from you.

Our Sleepy Little Hamlet of Mountaindale...Tried Finding Parking On a Monday Night?

Mountaindale, NY...a tiny quiet hamlet nestled into the corner of Sullivan county, a community rich in history but almost past by once the railroad left town...uhhh...NOT EXACTLY. Have you tried finding a parking space on a Monday or Wednesday night? Stop by and say hello, take part in our hamlets wealth of activities. On Monday and Wednesday, there is Yoga, Karate and Zumba keeping Main Street hopping, and starting in May, look for Belly Dancing to return to town as our season camping quests, and summer residents return from their winter retreats.

It is looking better and better at having a new place to eat in town, and as soon as that news is OFFICIAL, look for an announcement here on our news blog. Also coming to town...Second Time Around Studio/Gallery at 60 Main Street...look for activity as soon as the delicious Girl Scout cookie center leaves town...speaking of Girl Scout cookies, have you gotten your order in through your local Girl Scout?
